The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics was attending this year’s PARTEC (International Congress on Particle Technology) in Nuremberg from 26 to 28 September with two talks from the particle measurement working group. The event, which is considered one of the leading international congress for particle technology, provided an outstanding platform for scientists and researchers from all over the world to present their latest developments and findings in the field of particle technology.

Simon Aßmann gave a talk on “Inline band gap analysis of nanoparticles in the gas phase using UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy”. Applying absorption spectroscopy to nanoparticles is challenging, since, in addition to absorption, scattering of light occurs. Simon Aßmann discussed this complex problem and presented a method for a computational correction.

Peter Lang presented in his talk “Characterization of metal-oxide particles in spray flame synthesis by wide-angle light scattering (WALS) and laser induced incandescence (LII)” results from in situ investigations of iron oxide formation in the spray flame as well as the determination of the thermal accommodation coefficients for iron oxides. This parameter has a decisive importance in the determination of primary particle sizes by LII.
