Using a novel approach that combines broadband extinction measurements with tomographic methods, this work demonstrates the first in situ planar determination of the distribution of the optical band gaps of soot in flames. This optical property helps to better understand the soot formation process, but it is also of central importance for the other carbon particles that can be used, e.g. for solar cells.
